Information for ALL Rugby Club members
Keith Thompson - 02/03/2007
The Magpies Golfing Society is open to all members of the Rugby Club and by invitation to their guests. There are no annual or joining fees; merely a cost per event. The standard of play can best be described as 'wide ranging' - from hackers to complete bandits.
Paul Dommersen started the Society following a general committee meeting at the then Sutton Rugby Club and the first meeting was at Banstead Downs Golf Club in September 1973.
Paul's idea was to help those Club members who had or were thinking of packing up playing Rugby to keep in touch with each other and also to help them mix with those current Rugby players who have an interest in golf. Any member of the Rugby Club is eligible to play in the society. Indeed we are trying to encourage more of the younger members to join us.
Although the Society is not formally part of the Rugby Club it remains 'spiritually' linked and has on occasions sponsored 1st XV games and raised funds for the squad.
The Magpies Golfing Society traditionally has 3 meetings a year:
- The Christmas meeting is always at Kingswood Golf Club. Unfortunataley the 2006 meet (Friday 8th December) had to be cancelled due to appalling weather.
It is 'usual' to bring a guest for this particularly convivial day. Cost c£99 per pair, plus fines, for the full day. It is not however necessary to be a golfer to join in and if anybody would like to come to the somewhat extended lunch and not play golf they are more than welcome.
- The 2007 Spring meeting (Friday 13th May) will be at the new venue of Blethchingley Golf Club, near Godstone. Cost £70 per player for which you get an 18 hole stapleford competition, a 3 course lunch and a leisurely afternoon stroll comprising 9 holes of greensomes.
This will be the debut meeting for the captaincy of Sam Frost and the organisation of Keith Thompson. Many thanks to the trio of Paul Richards, Peter Hunt and Jerry Austin who have made such a success of it over the last few years under Paul Dommersen's continuing Presidency; and
- The 2007 Autumn meeting (c Friday 22nd September) has until 2006 been at New Malden Golf Club but a new venue is being sought. (Cost c£55 per player).
